thank you
by Nicole Lowman

while sitting on the bank

-boulders as our chairs-

we tossed our lines
across the stream

mine-
red and white bobber
floating on the surface
yours-
shiny blue lure
flickering in the sun

lunch was packed
-we’d made it together-
I stacked turkey
you sliced bread

when my line was taut
and the bobber disappeared
I called for your help
“Dadder, I got one!”

a sun fish
not very tasty
not even worth keeping

still-
you patted my back
and told me to open a beer
“Oh! While you’re at it!”
you called from your perch
“Light up a smoke too”

of course I obeyed
went to the car
lighter was stashed
between front seats

after three tries
the butt was ablaze
your foaming brew
washed it down
